Captain A. Roy Brown Memorial

Our Mission

The goal of this organization is a fundraising effort, to erect a memorial statue in memory of local World War 1 Flying Ace, Captain A. Roy Brown, who was credited with the downing of Baron Von Richtofen, "The Red Baron" on April 21st, 1918.

The War

Carleton Place, with a population of just 4,300 produced 23 military pilots during the First World War. Eight of these achieved the status of 'Ace' with a combined 93 victories. A total of 199 Canadians received the Distinguished Service Cross. Seven pilots from Carleton Place received this award. Capt A. Roy Brown received the honour twice, and was inducted into the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame. The monument will include several plaques detailing the story of the local First World War pilots.

Roy Brown never lost a pilot under his command during the entirety of the war. A remarkable achievement considering the average lifespan of an allied pilot during the war was 17.5 flying hours. "They used to call rookie pilots the 20-Minute Club because the life expectancy of a new pilot in combat in 1916-17 was 20 minutes,"
